Language

The mother language is Faroese, which originates from Old Norse. It is closely related to Icelandic and certain Norwegian dialects, but has developed its own characteristics.

Through the centuries it has unified the small nation. A rich epic-lyrical and narrative tradition, in combination with the isolation of small villages, has been the decisive factor for the preservation of the language.

In the primary school education in Faroese, Danish and English are compulsory.

Most Faroese people understand the other Nordic languages, written and spoken.

Almost all Faroese speak and understand English.
